  1. Your suitcase that goes in under the bus doesn’t matter about the size but 20kgs is strictly enforced, but your sleeping bag isn’t included in that weight. If you have a carry on suitcase as well as your day bag then I say good luck being comfortable on long leg trips in the bus because the suitcase will most likely not fit under your chair unless its a soft one that can be squashed under there. The above head racks are shallow so will only fit smaller bags not big things. So you’ll end up with everything right in your lap or under your feet – not the most comfortable. Besides, don’t take that much luggage to begin with anyway, you’re meant to keep space for shopping!!! And no, they dont continue weighing your bag throughout the trip its only on initial check-in – otherwise how would we shop!?

  2. I was in Italy in March 2010 and it was FREEEEEEZING rainy, cold – I’m talking thermal underwear, a shirt and two jumpers, one with a hood, scarf, gloves the lot. Admittedly, I live in a tropical climate but we had to fly into Paris before we got on to Pisa and it was -2 degrees celsius at 7am. That was early March. I went back to Europe in early June for my European Contrasts trip and the weather was great, at times cool enough for a cardigan but I mostly lived in shorts and a t-shirt!

  3. I was in Florence at the S.M.N train station, and my handbag was on my shoulder and I was wearing it so that it sat behind my arm as I was putting stuff in my wallet and I turned because I was so conscious of having it there and as I turned and brought my bag forward this gypsy lady that was all of a sudden inappropriately close to me slinked away once I looked at her, moral of the story – you have to be aware of any bag, but I think a handbag is more secure because you can hold it at the front of your body, Best to have one that goes across your body though, so that you can still have your hands free.

  4. So what length of time is this suggested packing list applied to? The maximum length tour Any time???

  5. I totally agree with that guy (Explorer1152831) there are just questions on top of questions!! To the aussieangel girl – you can take a suitcase it doesn’t have to be a backpack, I could never drag around a super heavy bag on my back! Pretty sure slight measurements won’t matter, I reckon they’ll only measure your bag if it looks significantly over the limits, minimal differences wouldnt be visible to the eye I wouldn’t think? :)

  6. I bought a Rick Steves travel clothes line and im taking little sachets of laundry detergent – bathroom hand basins will suffice for my washing and then it can dry over night! don’t panic so badly people!

  7. wow thats so soon you lucky things!! im waiting for european contrasts on june 11!!

  8. my main luggage measures 61cm x 41cm x 29cm. Only one measurement is over the other two are under the size restriction. Would this suitcase still be ok to take?

  9. I am thinking of taking a lightweight soft shell luggage suitcase, and a small hard-shelled cabin bag. Would it be silly to take both of those plus packing a day trip backpack into my checked luggage? I’m going on the European Contrasts tour in 2010 if that makes any difference?
