It’s been called “the prettiest gem in the stone crown of the world” and many will agree that Prague has quite a magical feel about it. From the Charles Bridge, to restaurants along the Vltava, learn how you can make the most of your 48 hours in Prague. Our city guide will give you the best of the history, food, culture and most importantly the nightlife!
We recommend starting of your first morning in the golden city of Prague with a walking tour through the city. When you travel with Contiki, you will be able to do this walking tour with a local guide, who knows the in’s and outs of the city. The walking tour is a great way to get acquainted with all of Prague’s top attractions: Hradcany Castle, the Cathedral of St. Vitus, the Charles Bridge and Wenceslas Square.
After the walking tour of the amazing city, you’ll be ready for an ice cold pilsner and some traditional Czech food. Novomestsky Pivovar (the New Town Brewery) is situated close to Wenceslas Square in the centre of Prague and is a traditional Czech pub, restaurant and micro-brewery all rolled into one.
The best time to go is during the day, this is when you might be lucky enough to get a table without waiting. In the evening, reservations are essential, both for groups and individuals. If you do decide to go in the evening, make a reservation as Novomestsky is “the” popular place for groups to meet and kick off their night.
Karavella is a nautically-themed bar close to the Old Town Square. For a land-locked country the theme is an interesting choice. When you see the décor of fishing nets, life-buoys, and a 5,000 litre under-floor aquarium, you hopefully will not think they have gone overboard!
The bar is situated in the cellar of a restaurant and is named after a famous merchant ship from the era of Columbus and Vasco de Gama. The staff (or ‘crew’) are referred to as ‘salty sea dogs’ and serve a good selection of beers and spirits.
Since you’ve already spent your time walking around the city, today see Prague from the water. Hop on a river boat and take a slow cruise on the Vltava River. The low angle and low stress vantage point of a rowboat you pilot yourself will let you take in many of the city’s most striking architectural land marks.
Young Czech’s love tea, and thus many tea rooms and café’s have popped up around the city. The soothing atmosphere of the café is perfect for relaxing and reflecting on the beauty of the city. This afternoon we recommend, spending your time in the finest of Prague’s elegance Kavarmy (cafes.) These rival Vienna’s as “places to be seen” and to perhaps have a carefree afternoon chat. Check out Kavarna Obecnidum, it’s an older café that has been returned to its pristine splendor.
Stroll down the 6 century old Charles Bridge. Seriously, if you thought the bridge was beautiful in the day, the bridge is even more beautiful at dusk, without crowds. When you go at dusk, the play of light turns the bridge and the city panorama into something completely different than the morning. With the right camera, the perfect photos of the river Vltava and the Prague Castle can be taken.
