This museum in Florence, Italy is most famous for being the home of Michelangelo’s original sculpture of David.
The Accademia is about a 5 minute walk from the Duomo in the center of Florence and seeing David, (perhaps the most famous of Michelangelo’s sculptures) is worth the price of admission. Although the replicas in the Piazza Signora and Piazza Michelangelo are impressive, there is something about the original that makes you believe in the sculptor’s genius.
Although there is a room with some paintings and a gallery filled with more of Michelangelo’s unfinished work for the tomb of Pope Julius II, David is by far and away the star.
This is the most popular museum in Florence and there are huge line ups in summer to get in. During summer you may stand in line for up to 3 hours unless you get there very early in the morning.
Tours with one night stops in Florence either spend the morning of the afternoon in the city and it may be best to see your schedule with your Tour Manager before making reservations.

We’ve added a link to info about the Uffizi….the Accademia is only small and it’s (often) faster to get in here than it is the Uffuzi. The Accademia has a few paintings by Ghirlandaio, Botticelli and a few others as well as plasters for may of Florence’s most famous sculptures. The Uffuzi has loads more paintings though.

In May, when my tour group arrived in Florence we had just under an hour to explore before the tour group met back for the guided tour. It was late afternoon, but a group took the chance of running over to see David before close and they were one of the last ones to get in with absolutely no line up. They didn’t have time to see the rest of the gallery, but they fared better than the rest of us as the next day it was at least a 2 hour wait, so most of us did not get the chance to see David at all. Thus, if you haven’t purchased advance tickets, late in the afternoon is a good time to give it a try if you only want to see the main attraction.

Cafe lattes, bruchetta, chianti, gnochi, limoncella, baci chocolates, gelati, pizza, it's impossible to not try everything in Italy.
Itter was one of the nicest town's I've ever been in, absolutely gorgeous. It's a sleepy town, but on Contiki you bring your own nightlife. This was one stop I wont forget.
