Bass Lake is a year-round resort town located in the Serra Nevada Mountains and the surrounding area is well known as the gateway to the south entrance to Yosemite National Park. The man-made lake was formed in 1910 when a dam was built as the south end of the Crane Valley and today the lake is 7km (4.5 miles) long and 1km (½ mile) wide. The water in the dam is used to generate electricity for central California and is stocked year round with fish by the California Department of Fish and Game. The Mono Native American tribe once made their home here.

  1. I live next to Bass Lake,Ca and have to say it is most beautiful during the prime season when the water is high and sun is shinning brightest. The water feels great especially when the sun is beating down on you. You can rent jet skies, boats, rafts, etc and have an awesome time. Another great thing about Bass Lake if you are interested in hiking are Angel Falls. The hike is a few miles there and back but absolutely breath taking. Once you reach the top if over looks the lake and is well worth the journey up. Enjoy!

  2. For a different take on Bass Lake history, read Hells Angels: The Strange and Terrible Saga of Outlaw Motorcycle Gangs by Hunter S. Thompson. A good read on the Wild Western, but don’t worry: the chances of running into renegade biker gangs in Bass Lake today is quite slim.
